Sandy beaches, amazing architecture and daily fresh fish are only few of the reasons why anyone should visit this hidden gem called Skyros island. Located close to Evia island, Skyros is part of the Sporades island group and it is famous for its traditional carnival and for its own horse breed, which can only be found there. Since it is not often the first choice of travellers who decide to pay a visit to the Greek islands, this place is like an unspoilt piece of heaven which makes it ideal if you’re searching for some quiet time away from the crowds.

If you asked me to describe it, I would say that it is actually a combination between the Sporades and the Cyclades. It is full of greenery which is typical of all Sporades islands but also boasts an amazing all-white town built upon a  rocky hill, a characteristic of the Cyclades’ architecture. At nights, you can walk and walk for hours through the town’s narrow streets, even get lost but never get tired. You’ll simply become amazed by the traditional architecture, you’ll want to stop and stare at the panoramic views from the top of the town and definitely enjoy a meal at some of the cutest little traditional taverns.

Ah! The food!! What can I tell you about the food in Skyros that can possibly describe it enough?Just imagine to be served the freshest fish and seashell everyday combined with some of the most amazing local side dishes to highlight the flavors! I mean the food is a reason itself to visit this place… It’s authentic Greek food, not the kind you’ll be served in really tourist places. Don’t forget to try their lobster pasta, because the island is famous for its lobsters. Plus, it is yummy, yummy, yummy! Also, the island breeds a large number of baby goats, so you may want to try their famous lemon baby goat recipe as well! My favorite places to eat were ‘Ιστορίες του Μπάρμπα’ in Molos area, ‘Ασημενός’ in Aspous area and ‘Μπαρμπα Γιάννης και Μαρίτσα’ in Skyros town.

If you are a beach person, you won’t be disappointed, coz there is simply one for every taste, either you are an adventurous type or you just want to relax on a sandy beach. Enjoy the natural environment at famous ‘Pefkos' beach or chill at the more family friendly ‘Molos’ or ‘Magazia' beaches. A few other options would be ‘Aspous' beach, ‘Atsitsa' beach and ‘Agios Fokas' beach. If you’re into more isolated and quiet beaches and you are prepared for some off road drive, you can always explore the rockier beaches in the island’s southern and northern part. One great example is ‘Agios Petros' beach which is also a nudist beach. In any case, you’ll definitely need an SUV coz roads can be rather tricky there and a GPS coz it’s a bit hard to find all of them.

Last but not least, my favorite spot by far was the location of ‘Agios Panteleimonas Church’. The church itself was the epitome of the Greek island church and it offered a mind-blowing view of the Aegean Sea which aligned perfectly with the church’s minimal lines and pure white. Made me really jealous of anyone lucky enough to get married there! Enjoy our photos!
